Pengerang

 

Overview

Pengerang is an area located to the south of Desaru at the southeastern tip in the state of Johor. With the completion of the Senai – Pasir Gudang –Desaru Highway, this has considerably shortened the travel time to and from Pengerang, with the travel time from Johor Bharu now less than an hour than previously.

In the past, Pengerang was the site of a huge World War 2 British coastal battery. In fact, the battery located at Tanjung Pengelih is said to be the largest defence fort located outside the United Kingdom. Its 610 hectare plot of land once housed soldier barracks as well as a hospital.

Pengerang is popular among Singaporeans as a tourist destination as it is conveniently adjacent to Singapore. This town is home to a 6,242 acre complex called the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) which forms part of the Johor state’s Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC). This PIC project was designed to strengthen the petrochemical industry in Pengerang.  Additionally, there are plans to commission an integrated refinery and petrochemical complex as well as an independent deepwater petroleum terminal.
