Overview
Plentong is a town in the Johor Bahru district, on the fringe of the state of Johor. In the heydays, Plentong was initially a Chinese settlement area known as ‘Tey Chu Kang’ which then developed into a Chinese new village before becoming a busy town like it is today. In the past, Tey Chu Kang was known for the exportation of cocoa and pineapples which were grown in plantations which dotted the village.
Plentong is the main center for the Malacca-Johor archdiocese. Besides a Catholic Saint Joseph’s Church, it also houses numerous other places of worship such as mosques and temples for believers of different faith. Additionally, one can also find numerous hypermarkets such as Tesco in the buzzing town of Plentong. It is no wonder then that Plentong contains one of the most populous sub-districts of Malaysia.
