Thierry LegrandKUALA LUMPUR (Feb 6): Entries for the 5th International LafargeHolcim Awards competition for sustainable construction close on March 21, according to a Bernama report today.

Organised by the LafargeHolcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction, the Awards offers US$2 million (RM8.35 million) in cash prizes.

Projects and concepts from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, planning, technology, and civil and materials engineering are eligible for entry.

Lafarge Malaysia Bhd president and CEO Thierry Legrand (pictured), said in a statement today that the company was looking forward to seeing Malaysian entries receive worldwide recognition.

Held every three years, the competition is divided into five geographic regions — each with its own jury of renowned specialists from science, business and society.

The juries are headed by Harry Gugger from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL Lausanne), Switzerland (for Europe); Ray Cole from The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada (for North America); Angelo Bucci from Universidad de São Paulo, Brazil (for Latin America); Nagwa Sherif from American University in Cairo, Egypt (for Middle East, Africa); and Donald Bates from University of Melbourne, Australia (for Asia Pacific).

"Malaysia's Datuk Dr Ken Yeang won the bronze award for the Asia Pacific region during the third cycle in 2012.

"We hope this three-year cycle competition will encourage more ideas that support the industry to build a better future," he added.

Yeang was also one of 15 finalists to compete for the Global Holcim Awards.
