KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 27): Some 270 families that resided at the Sentul police quarters will be relocated to a new facility in Taman Keramat AU1 as the quarters are being demolished for the construction of the mass rail transit (MRT) Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya (SSP) line.

The demolition started in June and will be completed by December, said MRT Corp Sdn Bhd and MMC-Gamuda KVMRT (T) Sdn Bhd (MGKT) in a joint statement.

“The 270 families living in the quarters are now temporarily housed in the Teratai Residence apartments in Setapak while waiting for the completion of the new police quarters,” said SSP line project director Datuk Amiruddin Maaris.

Their new quarters, he said, will be ready in December 2018. The 120sq-m units have three bedrooms each, together with facilities such as a surau, shops, a kindergarten and a community hall.

MGKT general manager Mohd Fuad Kamal Ariffin said the residents were fully assisted during the moving out process.

“Their temporary housing is paid for by the MRT project and they are provided with assistance, such as school buses for the children to get to the schools which they were already enrolled in,” said Mohd  Fuad.

Amiruddin said the MRT SSP line, also referred to as MRT2, requires 13 centralised labour quarters to house construction workers. Six of them have been completed, while another seven in Serdang are under construction and would be completed in six months.

For the overall construction, he said the project is currently on schedule at 13.7% completion.

For the underground section, progress is at 16.1%, and tunnelling works are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2018, he said, while 11.1% of the elevated section is completed. Bored piling and pier construction works are also being carried out at all sections along the alignment.
