PETALING JAYA (Feb 8): Dulux has declared Heart Wood as its colour of the year for 2018.

The shade — described by the paint giant as a “subtle and warm tone of grown-up pink that draws from the tactile qualities of natural wood and leather” — aims to impart comfort and ease as consumers seek to nestle down and create a “welcome home”, it said.

In his presentation, AkzoNobel Decorative Paints, South East & South Asia, Middle East managing director Jeremy Rowe said: “Colours play a significant role in creating a perfect, comforting environment. As a colour authority, Dulux exists to empower their consumers to make the right colour choices; choices that make them happy and proud of their homes.

“With the 2018 Colour of the Year and its four contemporary colour palettes, customers around the world can now create spaces within their homes that are truly theirs and up to date with their everyday needs,” he added.

According to him, the hue is a response to an unpredictable and rapidly-changing world with an overwhelming, never-ending amount of information and choices.

“Social media today is about bright colours that pop up to attract your attention. We hope that this warm and comforting colour will allow them to recharge and turn it down for them a little bit after a long day as our homes remain our sanctuary,” said Rowe.

Dulux said the colour was picked following extensive research by its colour team at its Global Aesthetic Centre, as well as 11 international experts.

“Calming and restorative, Heart Wood gives a sense of connection between the inside and outside world. The Heart Wood Home palette blends harmoniously with the materials from which the hero colour takes its inspiration.”

Dulux has crafted three supporting colour palettes that blend harmoniously with the materials that inspired Heart Wood, namely the Comforting Home (warm earth tones such as clay and blush pink, with rich welcoming textures such as silk and velvet to create a highly tactile space); the Inviting Home (cool shades of blue, neutrals and fresh green, pastel shades, coal and ink blue); and the Playful Home (yellow-toned green and gold with pops of colour).
