PETALING JAYA (June 19): The Penang state government will apply to the federal government for funds to repair Penang National Park facilities in Teluk Bahang, according to The Star.

The daily said it had earlier reported of poorly maintained facilities as well as broken benches, damaged items and rubbish strewn around the trail leading to the Teluk Kampi beach.

Penang Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said he had contacted the Forestry Department to find out the issues involved.

“I asked them for details on the amount of money needed for the place to be restored.

“I also wanted to know how much funding was requested by the park over the years and how much was allocated.

“It is a massive job as we are looking at fixing places that attract many tourists in Penang, and the National Park is one of them.

“The park is part of our tourism industry and now that the state and Federal Government are helmed by the same coalition, we will be asking them to provide us with funding,” he told The Star.

The park’s superintendent Saat Yaakob said that despite having requested for funding from the former federal government, “the requests were not approved as we were told that there were other more important issues”.
