Langat 2

HULU LANGAT (July 5): The Ministry of Water, Land and Natural Resources has assured that the Langat 2 water treatment plant (Langat 2) is able to supply an additional 1,130 million litres of treated water per day, up to the year 2025, for Klang Valley residents.

Its new minister Dr A Xavier Jayakumar said the plant is now 72% complete and confirmed that the first section of Phase 1 of Langat 2 is able to supply 325 million litres per day (MLD) of water to the state-owned Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) by November this year.

“We have a water reserve margin about 3% currently, so with this 325 MLD, of course the water reserve margin will increase to 7% by November.

“Our main interest is to increase the current water reserve margin that we have in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor and it will benefit about 1 million households,” he told reporters at the press conference during before his site visit to Langat 2.

However, Xavier expects the full completion of the plant to delay until 2022, from its initial schedule of 2019.

“The delay is because there are a lot of matters to be resolved like the land, planning and approval from related agencies.

“So, we have to sit down together and coordinate this delay that we have right now and make sure it is done within the timeframe,” he explained.

Upon its full completion, the water treatment and distribution facility, which is part of the Pahang-Selangor Raw Water Transfer project, will be able to address the state’s impending water crisis.

“We will be better, so you don’t have to worry about the shortage of water and water cut. The water reserve margin is good enough to support the residents in Selangor,” he added.

The project comprises 19 packages, involving Hulu Langat, Cheras, Sungai Besi, Bukit Jalil, Petaling, Bandar Kinrara, Bukit Dengkil, Ampang, as well as Keramat AU3 in Selangor.

Construction of the Langat 2 water treatment is necessary based on statistics obtained in 2014, which found that the population in Selangor needs 4,907 million litres of water each day, while water production is only 4,431 million litres per day, through 34 water treatment plant across the country.

“Langat 2 was built following the high demand, improving population and rapid growth in the Klang Valley,” Xavier said.

Langat 2 which is controlled by Pengurusan Aset Air Bhd (PAAB), a wholly-owned company under the Minister of Finance Inc, involved a total cost of about RM8 billion, including water treatment plant, water tunnel and Kelau dam in Bentong, Pahang. — theedgemarkets.com
