PETALING JAYA (Aug 7): Most of us have fond memories of our school days. Some also wonder how their alma maters are doing.
Unfortunately for some schools in Petaling Jaya, they are not doing so well.
According to a report from The Star daily today, Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah (pictured) found out to her dismay that many schools in the area did not receive their allocation from the Education Ministry.
As a result, repairs on these schools have been neglected.
“Many schools in Petaling Jaya are in dire need of structural repair as they were built decades ago.
“There are schools in Selangor with no water supply to the higher floors, including science laboratories, as they lack the funds for repair.
“There is an allocation for schools under the national budget,” The Star reported Maria saying during a visit to SK Sri Petaling in Section 12, Petaling Jaya.
“Schools need the allocation for repairs on roofs, wiring, flooring and toilets, among others.
“Priority needs to be given to the older schools. Students need a conducive environment to study in and I would support it if the Education Ministry allocates funds to the schools.”
The lawmaker explained that there were not just issues with the curriculum but also problems with the school structures.
“I will put together all my findings and send them to Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik,” she told the English daily.
