KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 15): The Kedah government wants to make it easier for the people in the state to own homes.

The state administration will therefore review current homeownership mechanisms and policies to allow this to happen, reported the New Straits Times (NST) today.

“We will look at existing and future projects so that more affordable homes can be launched and also find out why so many people still can't afford to own homes by looking at their purchasing power as well as their eligibility," State Housing, Industry and Investment and Local Government Committee chairman Tan Kok Yew said at the Kedah legislative assembly in Alor Setar today.

Tan also said some buyers find it hard to purchase a home as they do not meet certain standards and so the state plans to “tweak” the current housing policies.

"Any state government wants to provide housing for the people but there is always this problem of a mismatch between supply and demand.

“We will find a better solution for the people’s welfare to ensure that they can own a house and build a quality family,” NST reported Tan saying.

He was answering an additional question posed by Azhar Ibrahim (PAS-Ayer Hitam) at the assembly.

Azhar also asked about the progress of the People’s Housing Project (PPR) in Ayer Hitam.

Tan said the project involves the construction of 630 PPR units mainly for the Kubang Pasu district, NST reported.
