PETALING JAYA (Aug 28): The Malaysian government has stressed that foreigners who wish to reside in Malaysia need to apply for permanent residency through the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) program.

According to the press statement from the Prime Minister's Office, Malaysia imposes certain conditions on properties purchased by foreigners and information on these conditions are publicly available.

“Purchase of properties however, does not guarantee automatic residency in the country,” said the statement.

Meanwhile, the PMO also emphasised that Malaysia welcomes all tourists including from China and there are no restrictions imposed on foreign tourists as long as they meet all the necessary immigration requirements imposed by the Malaysian authorities.

In the case of China, tourists are given a single-entry 30-day visa to the country.

According to government’s data, Malaysia has attracted some 2.3 million Chinese tourists in 2017 and is looking to attract up to 10 million in the coming years.

“In welcoming foreign investments to Malaysia, the Government reiterates that it welcomes foreign direct investment that contributes to the transfer of technology, provides employment for locals and the setting up of industries,” said the statement.

Yesterday, Mahathir announced that foreigners will not be allowed to purchase properties at the Forest City mega project in Johor or be granted visas to live there.
