PETALING JAYA (Sept 10): Residents living near the site of the Highland Towers site have urged the authorities to ensure that all safety requirements are met before the site is redeveloped, reported The Malaysian Insight.
A proposal to turn the site into a park has been welcomed by local residents, but the government should only go through with the plans after the government has studied all the safety issues in the area, said Taman Sri Ukay residents’ association secretary Shila Kasim.
She added that they will be seeking a meeting with the authorities to find out more about the plan, and that they are careful about plans involving developments in the area.
Meanwhile, Selangor housing and urban living chairman Haniza Mohd Talha said all safety checks have been completed and the development of a park instead of another high-rise on the site will reduce the risk of a landslide or other incidents.
She added that constructing another high-rise building on the site would only remind them of the tragedy 15 years ago, where 48 people died after one of the three towers collapsed.
Haniza said the transformation of the site into a park can start as early as next year.
