SEREMBAN (Nov 7): Do you know that defaulters owe the Seremban Municipal Council almost RM35 million in unpaid assessments.

It is with this in mind that ratepayers here have until Nov 30 to pay assessment arrears or risk having their properties sealed or auctioned, Seremban Municipal Council president Datuk Zazali Salehudin told The Star.

He said the amount of arrears owed was still high despite the council taking measures to try and recover them in the past, reported the daily.

“We will be taking legal action against the defaulters as the unpaid bills have now run into the tens of millions of ringgit,” Zazali said.

The president also revealed that people and businesses who were fined for illegal extensions to their properties and putting up advertisements without proper approval from the council were among the defaulters.

Culprits were also found among motorists, with the council recording about RM30 million in unpaid traffic compound notices.

Zazali said that motorists should take advantage of a 50% discount currently being offered by the council to pay their compounds.

He explained that the council has to collect the arrears to finance “infrastructure development, public facilities and better landscape for Seremban folk”.
