KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 12): Former defence minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein has called on Putrajaya to “stand its ground and prepare to physically defend Malaysia’s territory and sovereignty” against Singapore, The Malay Mail reported today.

Coming under flak was current deputy defence minister Liew Chin Tong’s remarks for peaceful negotiations rather than “fight fire with fire”, with Hishammuddin saying that “This isn't about fighting fire with fire. This is no longer a verbal war with Singapore. This is about standing your ground for Malaysia as the government.”

You have been entrusted to lead the Armed Forces and defend the nation. Stop the rhetorics and just do it,” Hishammuddin said on his Facebook page.

According to a report by Malaysiakini, he also stated on Twitter on Monday that Malaysia’s Ministry of Defence had remained silent on the latest maritime spat with Singapore whereas the island state’s cabinet “was standing behind the republic on the matter”.

Hishammuddin also touched on Singapore defence minister Ng Eng Hen’s statement on Facebook on Dec 7 in comparison.

Ng said: “These are serious violations of Singapore's sovereignty. Our security forces have acted with restraint despite continuing intrusions and provocations. Singaporeans are peace-loving, but I strongly caution violators to leave Singapore territorial waters.”

Hishammuddin said he would bring up the Ministry of Defence’s stance/silence to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Home Affairs.
