KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 31): Last day of the year, sigh. Time to reflect, time for some resolutions and time TO PARTY.

And what is a year-end party without some good old fashioned fireworks.

Our very own Kuala Lumpur will have a spectacular music and fireworks display at KLCC Park, Bernama reported.

There will also be a “specially” choreographed musical display at the KLCC Lake Symphony Fountain show boosted by lights, lasers and pyrotechnics.

Accompanying the event is a three-hour concert featuring artistes such as Datuk M. Nasir, UNIC and Drum Circle Group & SDC Entertainment, as well as Dasha Logan, Aman Ra, Elaine Lee, Balan Kashmir and Aziz Harun

The concert begins at 9pm today.

Meanwhile, check out how other cities welcome the New Year with their own brand of fireworks.

MARINA BAY, SINGAPORE

If you are on a budget, well, this is not too far away eh? Just a long drive if you are a Klang Valleyite and you are there. Marina Bay has loads of other touristy attractions besides the fireworks. Also check out the “local” food and end up saying that is so much better back in Malaysia.

COPACABANA BEACH, RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

We now fly to the other end of the globe to Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro. The world famous beach also blasts out the fireworks as the new year rides in. The girl from Ipanema may be a bit difficult to see at night but you can still sip on a Caipirinha, Brazil’s national beverage, while skies are lighted up.

NEW YORK, THE US

So many American movies have featured New Year’s in the Big Apple. One famous event besides the fireworks is the dropping of the Waterford crystal ball during the countdown to the new year. New Yorkers become friendlier during such events, so make some new pals.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

What is there not to like when you have the skies in full bloom over iconic structures such as the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. The themes for the fireworks also change every year, so hold your breath for something unique. It sure is a Thunder from Down Under.

LONDON, THE UK

We all know this super city which was once the centre of a powerful empire and it also has a fireworks display as the new year dawns. See Big Ben, London Bridge and London Eye in a colourful night sky as you enjoy the chill winter air. According to the AutoEurope.com travel blog, London “leads for best fireworks in Europe”.

MOSCOW, RUSSIA

Scene for all those Cold War spy thrillers, the Red Square and St Basil’s Cathedral become a bit less “intimidating” with some colourful lights in the sky. If you are a history buff, check out the city’s State History Museum, during office hours of course and not at night. Enjoy yourself, comrade.

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND, THE UK

We fly back to the UK and to… EDINBURGH??? Yep, apparently the people from the home of the Haggis take New Year’s eve festivities quite seriously. They even have a name for it: Hogmanay. Ok, now learn “Auld Lang Syne” in a Scottish accent and you are all ready to watch Scotland’s “best” fireworks display.

PARIS, FRANCE

Oolala, that most romantic of cities and a structure that is recognised the world over, The Eiffel Tower. Join the outdoor party at the Champs-Elysees and savour the superb French champagne and food as you wait for the night Parisian sky to be drenched in colour. The “City of Lights” is extra beautiful this time of the year.

DUBAI, THE UAE

Marvel at the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, being used as the base of a fireworks display. According to the WorldTopTop.com, the city’s fireworks display is like a circuit – “It starts at the Burj Khalifa and keeps launching the fireworks as it passes through various landmarks”. Interesting!

TAIPEI, TAIWAN

Back to the Far East, the home of smelly tofu, Taipei will not be outdone. Also making use of its famous Taipei 101 building, you can check out one of the best fireworks displays in the region. According to online guides, you can view the display from most parts of the city, so there is no fuss about choosing an “ideal” spot to take in the sight.
