KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 26): They say smoking can result in terminal diseases but an incident in India has proven that it can even be “deadly” in other ways.

A report by the Tamil daily Makkal Osai said that a smoker was beaten to death while watching South Indian superstar Rajinikanth’s latest movie.

The victim refused to cease smoking when he was asked to by those who were irritated in the Tamil Nadu cinema.

This resulted in a patron in the neighbouring seat dragging him out of the cinema and smashing a plank over the smoker’s head.

The victim was taken to the hospital when he started bleeding heavily but later succumbed to his injuries.

The police have since arrested the violent anti-smoking crusader.

In November last year, a woman was beaten to death on board a train near the Barei station in Lucknow, India when she asked a group of youngsters not to smoke.

Closer to home, a ‘Nasi Kandar’ restaurant worker in Section 25, Shah Alam was slapped by a customer who was unhappy when told not to smoke in the restaurant earlier this month.

Shah Alam district police chief, ACP Baharudin Mat Taib said the 25-year-old worker, an Indian national, was not injured in the incident
