SEBERANG PERAI (March 8): There should be “firm enforcement” over regulations the “governing” of the people’s housing project (PPR) units, The Malay Mail reported Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin (pictured) saying today.

“When enforcement action was not taken, then the people will not know that there are laws and guidelines that they must adhere to,” she told the media here after officiating a World Women’s Day event.

Enforcement must also be regular and the public need to understand that laws were applicable to all, she added.

Zuraida was commenting about the eviction of ineligible tenants at the Taman Manggis PPR units in Penang recently.

She also revealed that she has consulted with Penang local government and housing development committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo on the Taman Manggis eviction and added that she supported for the state’s stern action.

“I accept his explanation on the procedures and the standard operating procedures regarding PPR units, this has to be enforced,” the news portal reported her saying.

But Zuraida also asked the state government to work out a compromise with the evicted tenants still camping out at Komtar in protest.

“The state can look at how to facilitate and help them if they really have nowhere else to go, there is no need for them to be sleeping there.”

Meanwhile, she also confirmed her ministry is planning to build more PPR units in Gelugor, Teluk Kumbar and Balik Pulau.
