KUALA LUMPUR (July 19): The "official receipt" allegedly received by a developer after making a RM2 million "political donation" to former Federal Territories minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor was not found in Umno's official receipt book, the High Court was told today.

Nik Muhammad Faiez Idris, assistant superintendent at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, said he went to the Umno headquarters at the Putra World Trade Centre yesterday, after receiving an instruction from the investigation officer of the case to obtain the party's official receipt book.

Faiez, 27, however, said he was unable to find any carbon copy of the "official receipt" received by Aset Kayamas Sdn Bhd managing director Tan Sri Chai Kin Kong, in the receipt book.

Chai, when cross-examined by Tengku Adnan's lead counsel Datuk Tan Hock Chuan on Wednesday, had produced a receipt from his wallet that he claimed he received from Umno for the RM2 million "political donation" in June 2016.

He said the receipt was given by Tengku Adnan as an acknowledgement, two days after he had handed over the cheque, which was made to Tadmansori Holdings Sdn Bhd.

Chai, 60, who had known Tengku Adnan for more than 30 years, also confirmed that the signature on the "official receipt" for the RM2 million donation was that of Tengku Adnan.

He told the court he gave the RM2 million cheque to Tengku Adnan as the latter told him that Umno needed about RM5 million to RM6 million for two by-elections conducted in June 2016 — one in Sungai Besar, Selangor and another in Kuala Kangsar, Perak.

Tengku Adnan, popularly known as Ku Nan, is accused of receiving a RM2 million cheque from Aset Kayamas which was deposited into his investment firm Tadmansori's account.

He allegedly committed the offence in June 2016, knowing that Aset Kayamas had a connection with his official duties as the Federal Territories minister.

Replying to DPP Julia Ibrahim, Faiez said he has seized a red-coloured official receipt book from a female staff who worked in Umno's finance department during his visit yesterday.

Julia: Did you find the receipt with serial number 376241 (in the official receipt book)?

Faiez: Yes, I found it.

Julia: Can you tell the court what is the date (of the receipt)?

Faiez: The receipt is dated Nov 12, 2018. This is the carbon copy kept by the (Umno) office.

Julia: Referring to IDD74 ("official receipt" tendered by Chai to High Court on Wednesday), can you check whether it was in the book (of receipt)?

Faiez: There is no carbon copy for this IDD74.

Julia: Referring to IDD74, what was the date stated there?

Faiez: The date stated is June 14, 2016.

The book was then tendered as evidence in court.

Earlier, Justice Mohamed Zaini Mazlan allowed the prosecution to call Faiez, who is the prosecution's additional witness, to produce Umno's official receipt book.

Justice Zaini also allowed the prosecution to conduct its examination-in-chief today despite the defence's objection to it.

He said the defence will be afforded ample time and opportunity to examine the official receipt book after it has been tendered, taking into account that the trial will only resume on Aug 1.

"The fact that the document (official receipt book) will be in the safe custody of the court means it is more convenient (for the defence)," he added.
