KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 22): They were made to get new tenants, could not get back their RM10,000 rental deposit and also asked to pay for renovations.

These were the “troubles” faced by six hospitality management college students from their landlord of a condominium unit in Damansara Heights, reported The Star.

“We found the listing on Facebook by the previous tenant who was moving out.

“He told us that he was looking for new tenants, as he wanted to get back his deposit from the landlord,” one of the students named Chai told the daily.

The students paid RM10,000 to the previous tenant “in contra for the deposit” when they decided to rent the place.

“We agreed to rent the unit from Jan 1 last year to Jan 1 this year.

“Unlike the previous tenant, we did not sign any formal tenancy agreement with the landlord,” Chai explained.

After a year, the landlord inspected the unit as the students prepared to move out and that was when they were “accused” of causing “a lot of damage to the unit”.

They were also ordered to get new tenants “if we want our deposit back”, “just like how we first rented it”.

“Otherwise, we will have to pay for the repairs,” the daily reported Chai saying.

MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong told The Star that the students’ plight is “a clear case of bullying. The landlord should not have taken advantage of the students”.

Chong also added that his department’s legal adviser James Ee “would issue a letter of demand to the landlord for the deposit and contact her to justify the renovation cost”.
