KUALA LUMPUR (March 20): The Singapore government has agreed to provide accommodation for Malaysian workers in the island-state during the Movement Control Order period, said Minister of Defence Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri.

“We decided that all our workers in [Singapore] will continue with work, and the Singapore government has agreed to prepare their accommodation for two weeks,” said Ismail at a press conference today on the MCO update.

“When they return home, the Singapore side will undertake screening tests on them,” said Ismail.

The clarification came amid news that some Malaysian employees were found sleeping in MRT stations, as they were unable to secure accommodation, and were not given one by their employers.

During the normal period, as many as 300,000 Malaysians travel daily to Singapore to work.

Meanwhile, Ismail said that delivery of products between the two countries, such as food supply, will continue as normal.

“But the drivers will be screened during entry and exit, and all [the costs for the screening] will be borne by Singapore,” he added.

The two governments, he added, have agreed to form two committees — one being a joint committee at a ministerial level, to be chaired by the minister of defence of both countries, as well as a work committee to be chaired by the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of both countries.
