KUALA LUMPUR (March 28): Malaysia has recorded 159 new COVID-19 cases at 12pm today, bringing the total to 2,320, said Health Director-General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

This marks a rise in new cases, from 130 recorded on Friday. The daily figures for new cases have been above 100 in the past two weeks.

“Of the total, 73 patients are being treated in the ICU (intensive care unit), of which 54 patients require breathing assistance,” Noor Hisham told a press conference on the COVID-19 update today.

Meanwhile, another 61 patients have been discharged, bringing the total healed cases to 320 or a discharge rate of 13.8% so far.

Unfortunately, the ministry also recorded one new death today, bringing the total to 27 or a rate of 1.16%.

The deceased, who passed away at 10.50am this morning, was marked as case no. 2,162 — a Malaysian male aged 61 with a history of diabetes and high blood pressure.

The patient was treated in Hospital Tangkak on March 24, and transferred to Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital in Muar on March 25.

MoH calls for 5,084 tabligh participants to be tested

An update for the Seri Petaling tabligh cluster, which took up nearly half of the confirmed cases to-date, Noor Hisham said 17,584 participants have been screened, samples were taken for 12,500, with 1,207 positive cases, 6,648 tested negative, while another 4,645 samples are pending results.

“We need to find the 5,084 which we have not tested yet among the tabligh group. We hope that we can test them in time.

“We have their address and we can try to find them. Hopefully, they can come forward to do the testing,” Noor Hisham said.

Meanwhile, Noor Hisham also denied that the suicide case in Serdang Hospital reported today was a COVID-19 patient.

“Yes there was a suicide report but the patient tested negative. We screen all patients who are brought into ICU for COVID-19,” he said.
