TOKYO (April 16): While staying at home to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Japanese shuttlers kept themselves busy with the coffee cup challenge game, and to motivate the public who may feel bored staying at home to join the challenge, China Press reported recently.

The #coffeecupchallenge was started one year ago as an easy indoor game, where the player just needs a racket, shuttle and a coffee cup. The object of the game is to hit the shuttle into the cup to complete the challenge.

Initiated by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to encourage people to stay active at home, three Japanese shuttlers who are unable to go for group training are taking the lead to demonstrate the challenge.

The challenge started with Wakana Nagahara, followed by Takeshi Kamura and Aya Ohori. BWF posted their video on Facebook yesterday and some of netizens have agreed to take on the challenge.

To recap, Japan prime minister Shinzo Abe had on April 7, 2020, declared a month-long state of emergency in seven prefectures and announced a record stimulus package in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although the state of emergency is not a lockdown, many businesses such as entertainment centres and restaurants in major cities have voluntarily shut down to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
