Consumer groups urge Mydin to follow health ministry advice on disinfection

PETALING JAYA (April 19): Consumer groups have urged Mydin hypermarkets (pictured) to follow the advice issued by the health ministry concerning its disinfection efforts using the mist spray, Free Malaysia Today (FMT) reported.

“At this point, it is best to listen to expert advice from the ministry,” Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) president Paul Selvaraj told FMT.

He also added that it was possible the disinfectants could have negative effect on people.

Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam, Selangor president Jacob George also agreed with Selvaraj, saying it was best to leave health-related matters to the health ministry, reported the news portal.

Last week, health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah explained that spraying with chemicals for 30 seconds was not enough to effectively disinfect people.

He added that the chemicals used in such equipment could even be harmful to the eyes and mouth.

Earlier, Datuk Wira Haji Ameer Ali Mydin, Managing Director of Mydin Mohammad Holdings said in a statement that the mist spray used in its hypermarkets is eco-friendly, US EPA and FDA recognised to ensure that “it is safe for all and does not provide any irritation to skin and eyes”.

“It also provides longer-lasting antimicrobial properties which the standard disinfection solutions currently available in the market do not have,” he added.
