KUALA LUMPUR (April 23): Malaysia's daily new cases jumped to 71 today, which is lower than the number of recoveries at 90, according to the Ministry of Health.

This is the seventh consecutive day that Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases are in the double digits, and is the eighth time since the Movement Control Order (MCO) started on March 18.

The country's current infection number increased slightly to 5,603 cases.

Meanwhile, the total number of cured cases is at 3,542 as of noon today, representing a recovery rate of 63.2%.

This means the number of active cases is now 1,966 — the lowest since March 27 (1,876 active cases) — with patients already isolated and given treatment.

To date, 42 patients are being treated in the intensive care unit, with 21 of them needing respiratory assistance, according to health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in his daily update.

Two more deaths were reported today, bringing the death toll to 95 cases, representing a mortality rate of 1.7%.

The deceased were a 32-year-old woman and a 67-year-old man.

The woman had high blood pressure and close contact with a Covid-19 case who is related to the Muar specialist hospital cluster in Johor.

Meanwhile, the man had several chronic illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and kidney failure.

He had close contact with a Covid-19 patient related to the Bali cluster.

Selangor remains the state with the highest number of confirmed infections at 1,369 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur (1,066), Johor (651) and Sarawak (459).

Malaysia still ranks fourth among Asean countries with the highest number of Covid-19 cases.

Singapore still tops the list with 11,178 cases after 1,037 more confirmed infections were reported today.

This is followed by Indonesia with 7,775 cases, and the Philippines with 6,981 cases.
