KUALA LUMPUR (April 24): It is the minister who is responsible for the undistributed food aid and not overworked Welfare Department officers, said Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh according to a Malaysiakini report today.

In a post on her Twitter account last night, the former women, family and community development deputy minister said that the chaos in implementing the distribution of food aid is due to political instructions from the top.

“Do not blame the Welfare Department officers. Many of them are overworked. This happens when political instructions are given by top leadership resulting in chaos in implementation.

“It is not the fault of @JKMHQ. That’s why we hold the minister responsible,” she said, without mentioning which minister she was referring to.

Attached to her Twitter post is a Malaysiakini article dated April 23 in regard to Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai expressing outrage that over 700 government-sponsored Covid-19 food packs were found still sitting in the Bandar Tun Razak Sports Complex in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.

This was despite Tan having earlier expressed concern that the food packs were left undistributed on April 19, and that the authorities had not given him the green light to distribute the food aid to his constituents.

Malaysiakini said Tan claimed that there were double standards in the permission given to MPs to distribute the aid, noting how Bandar Tun Razak MP Kamaruddin Jaffar, who is a member of the ruling coalition, had obtained approval from the Welfare Department to distribute food packs.

He also refuted a claim by Women Family and Community Development Minister Rina Harun that nobody is sidelined in terms of aid distribution during the movement control order (MCO) period.
