KUALA LUMPUR (May 7): Parliament speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff M Yusof has confirmed the receipt of a letter by Sabah chief minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, proposing to table a motion of confidence for Langkawi MP Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pictured).

In a text to theedgemarkets.com, Ariff also said to “wait for the media statement tomorrow” from the Dewan Rakyat secretary’s office.

A letter sighted by theedgemarkets.com dated May 1 from Shafie, who is also Semporna MP and president of Parti Warisan Sabah, said he was seeking permission to table a motion showing that the former prime minister commanded the support of the majority of MPs.

In the letter, Shafie also said the proposal does not intend to undermine the constitutional powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to appoint the Prime Minister.

Parliament will reconvene for the first time this year on May 18, after the scheduled sitting was pushed back by two months.
