KUALA LUMPUR (May 28): The Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan (pictured) will shutter permanently and the services of all its employees will be terminated by the end of this month, reported the Malay Mail today.

Basing its report from a letter dated May 27 by Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan general manager David Scully to the staff, it said the hotel is unable to keep on operating owing to “a lack of demand for hotel services”.

“The employer had taken early steps to find alternative methods to reduce the effect of business losses such as temporary suspension of work on employees, but this effort still burdened the company and resulted in the termination of employees due to the hotel’s closure.

“Therefore, we wish to inform you that your position in Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan will be terminated starting from May 31, 2020,” Scully wrote in the letter

Scully also said in the letter that hotel staff will be briefed “on termination benefits and the Social Security Organisation’s (Socso) Employment Insurance System”.

The staff was also informed that they would be paid for the remainder of their annual leave, while work termination benefits and payment for notice of work termination will be “in line with Sabah’s labour laws”, reported the news portal.

Malay Mail also said that Chinese-language newspaper Sin Chew Daily reported an employee at Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan had confirmed receiving the above letter yesterday.

The 26-floor four-star Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan has 290 rooms, nine suites and 10 meeting rooms. It started operations in 2012.
