Source of infection in Cheras flat cluster could be Hari Raya visits — Health D-G

KUALA LUMPUR (June 2): Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pictured) said the source of infection for the Cheras flat cluster announced yesterday is still under investigation, but noted that it is likely to be Hari Raya visits.

According to him, six confirmed infections, involving Malaysians, have been detected in this cluster.

He said close contacts for these six Malaysians had undergone screening. A total of 120 people have been screened, and 76 were negative while 38 are waiting for the results.

Speaking at the daily briefing, Noor Hisham told the media that the first case (index case) of this cluster has been identified from the screening of tahfiz schools in collaboration with the Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM) and the Ministry of Health (MoH).

However, no staff and teachers from the tahfiz schools had attended the Seri Petaling tabligh gathering, as the investigations revealed.

So far, the six positive cases detected from this cluster involve three residents from the Cheras flat while the other three were from outside the flat area.

Noor Hisham said these six positive cases have been detected through Active Case Detection, which includes the family members and friends of the index case.

Besides Active Case Detection activity in the Cheras flat, some preventive measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 has also been taken, including contact isolation and sampling activities, disinfection process, as well as the health education advice by practising 3W (wash, wear and warn) and avoiding 3C (crowded place, confined space and close conversation).

The MoH announced 20 new Covid-19 cases today, of which 15 were imported while the remaining five were local transmissions.

This brought the cumulative cases in the country to 7,877.

No death was recorded for the eleventh consecutive day. The country’s death toll is at 115, which represents 1.46% of overall cases.

The number of active cases dropped to 1,292, with six patients currently being treated in intensive care units and two of them needing respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, 66 patients were discharged today — more than triple the number of new cases reported — bringing the total recoveries in the country to 6,470. The recovery rate stood at 82.1% of overall cases.
