KUALA LUMPUR (June 4): Malaysia's new Covid-19 cases jumped to 277 today, of which 275 were local transmissions while two were imported cases, according to the Ministry of Health.

This is the highest ever daily figure recorded in the country; the second highest was on March 26 with 235 cases.

Of the 275 local transmissions, 271 cases involved foreign nationals with 270 emerging from repeat testing of detainees at the Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot Centre, while another case was detected at a construction site in Pudu.

This means local transmissions among Malaysians only amounted to four cases, said health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pictured).

Out of the 277 new cases reported today, Kuala Lumpur recorded 271 cases, pushing the state's tally to 2,370 or 28.7% of overall cases.

This is followed by Negeri Sembilan with three cases, Selangor with two cases and Pahang with one case.

Total infections in the country surged past the 8,000-mark to 8,247 today.

The number of active cases rose to 1,573 — the highest since May 8 (1,564), with patients already isolated and given treatment.

Noor Hisham said six patients were in intensive care unit with two of them needing respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, 28 patients were discharged today, which brings the number of recovered patients to 6,559 since the outbreak began in January this year.

The country's Covid-19 recovery rate is now at 79.5% out of the total cumulative cases.

On the bright side, no deaths were reported for the 13th consecutive day, maintaining the Covid-19 death toll at 115, translating into 1.39% of overall cases.
