KUALA LUMPUR (June 6): Malaysia saw new Covid-19 cases nearly double from yesterday’s 19, rising to 37 new cases as of noon today.

At his daily briefing, Ministry of Health (MoH) director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah announced that today’s new cases brought the total number of cases in Malaysia to 8,303. Active cases stood at 1,551.

Five cases were in intensive care units (ICU), though none required respiratory assistance.

Of the 37 new cases today, eight were imported cases that contracted the virus abroad. Of the 29 locally transmitted cases, 10 were Malaysian citizens, while 19 were foreigners.

Of the 10 cases involving Malaysians, one was in Sarawak, eight were in Selangor and another in Negeri Sembilan.

Meanwhile, the 19 cases involving foreigners included five in Selangor, eight in Kuala Lumpur, four in Negeri Sembilan, and one each in Sarawak and Labuan.

The country saw 25 recoveries today, bringing the total number of recovered cases to 6,635, translating into a recovery rate of 79.9%.

One patient succumbed, bringing the death toll from the virus in Malaysia to 117 or 1.4% of the total amount of cases.

The deceased (case No 2,296) was a Malaysian female, aged 79, believed to have maintained close contact with positive case No 1,508. She started exhibiting symptoms on March 18, and was admitted into the Sungai Buloh Hospital on March 26 once she tested positive for the virus. She passed away yesterday at 2.05pm.

In terms of clusters, the healthcare profession cluster in Kuching, Sarawak will no longer be surveyed by the ministry.

However, the Kuala Lumpur construction site cluster in Lembah Pantai saw six new cases, bringing the total number of cases of the cluster to 67, with 26 active cases.

Meanwhile, the Pedas cluster saw four new cases, resulting in total cases in the cluster rising to 206 cases, with 105 being active.

The Kuala Lumpur cleaning company cluster saw three new cases, while the Pudu and Kampung Sungai Lui clusters saw one new case each.
