KOTA KINABALU (June 7): Sandakan's the Nak Hotel (pictured) here will close its doors for the last time on June 15, reported The Star yesterday.

The operators of the hotel announced the decision to shutter on the Ba Lin Rooftop Bar & Restaurant (also run by Nak Hotel) Facebook page.

"It is with a heavy heart that Nak Hotel has decided to close its doors for the first time in over 54 years, until further notice.

"The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, global lockdowns and advice against social gatherings have all contributed to making it operationally unsustainable for us," said the post yesterday.

Meanwhile, general manager Linn Ngui told the daily that it had been extremely challenging operating during the movement control order (MCO) period.

"Our priority has always been making sure our employees are taken care of. For the past few months, we have burned through our savings and are now unable to sustain the current business model,” she told FMT.

Some of the hotel’s 20 staff “would be retrenched and while others would be given other roles in the company”, she added.

The hotel’s restaurant San Da Gen on the ground floor of the building will remain open even after the closure of the hotel.

The 24-room Nak Hotel was opened back in 1966 was named after Ngui Ah Kui, a clerk who later became a Member of Parliament, reported FMT.
