KUALA LUMPUR (June 9): Pakatan Harapan (PH) and its allies, which held a joint meeting today reportedly to nominate a candidate for the prime minister's post, said a decision will be made within a week.

In a joint statement, PH said it held the meeting, chaired by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, with disputed Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Parti Warisan Sabah president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

"The meeting today saw a comprehensive discussion on each individual party's stand and witnessed a very positive progress. The process to finalise all decisions will be made within a week's time," it said.

PH is now comprised of PKR, Parti Amanah Negara and DAP, after Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced the Malay-based party's exit from the coalition.

Its two allies are the Dr Mahathir-led Bersatu faction, and Parti Warisan.

Last week, Bersatu said it had formalised the sacking of five party leaders, including Dr Mahathir as chairman, after the party's supreme council held a meeting the previous night.

Dr Mahathir, however, insisted he remains the legitimate chairman of Bersatu, describing the party's move to sack the five including himself as "illegal" and going against the party's constitution.

PH and its allies have been working to reclaim the mandate they won in the historical 14th general election on May 9, 2018, which saw the coalition form the federal government for about 22 months, before collapsing in late February.

This followed what was dubbed the "Sheraton Move", led by Muhyiddin and former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, resulting in the establishment of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

On March 1, Muhyiddin was sworn in as the new prime minister, after Dr Mahathir refused to lead the PN coalition comprising Bersatu, Barisan Nasional, PAS, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR).
