KUALA LUMPUR (June 12): The Ministry of Health (MoH) announced 33 new cases of Covid-19 today, of which 17 were local transmissions, while the remaining 16 were imported cases.

Thus, the total number of positive cases in the country has risen to 8,402, with four patients currently being treated in intensive care. 

Of the 17 local transmissions, 14 cases involved foreign workers while three cases involved Malaysians, said health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in his daily briefing today.

Providing a breakdown for the three cases involving Malaysians, one case had close contact with patient number 7,735 here, one was detected during a tahfiz centre screening in Selangor, while the last case involved the most recent fatality.

The deceased was an eighty-five-year-old woman who was pronounced dead yesterday in her house. The deceased was taken to Keningau Hospital in Sabah, where she tested positive for the virus.

Her passing brings the death toll from COVID-19 to 119, which represents 1.42% of overall cases.

Meanwhile, of the 16 imported cases reported today, nine cases involved Malaysians who have returned from Egypt, while the rest involved returnees from the Netherlands (two), Singapore (one), the UK (one), the United Arab Emirates (one), Vietnam (one) and Korea (one), bringing the total imported cases to 582, said Noor Hisham.

According to him, there are currently 1,115 active cases in the country – the lowest since March 22 (1,157).

Meanwhile, 103 patients were discharged today, bringing the total recoveries to 7,168 which represents 85.3% of cumulative cases.
