Malaysia reports 43 new Covid infections today, and one death

KUALA LUMPUR (June 13): Malaysia registered 43 new cases of Covid-19 infections today, of which 38 were local transmissions while five were imported cases.

This brings the Covid-19's tally in the country to 8,445, according to Health Director-General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

There were also 143 recoveries reported today, which pushed the total recovery rate to 86.57% of total cases, or 7,311 patients.

This leaves 1,014 active cases now, with four in intensive care.

One new fatality was also reported today — in Sabah — which pushed the death toll from the outbreak in Malaysia to 120.

The deceased was a 96-year-old woman who passed away at home yesterday. The source of her infection is still under investigation.

Foreign workers make up about two-thirds of new local transmissions

Among the local transmissions, 23 cases involved foreign workers while 15 were locals, Noor Hisham said during his briefing on the Covid-19 situation in the country today.

Of the 23 cases, 21 were detected among residents of the Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot who have been transferred to the Malaysian Immigration Academy in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan; one was detected at the Pasar Pemborong Sayur in Sabah, and another was a foreign worker at a plantation in Temerloh, Pahang.

Of the 15 locals who were infected, four were found in Selangor, five in Negeri Sembilan, one each in Kuala Lumpur, Pahang and Perak, two in Melaka, and one in Sabah — which was the latest fatality.

As for the five imported cases, four were locals and one was a permanent resident.
