KUALA LUMPUR (June 23): Even though he will not agree to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad being prime minister, PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pictured) is “open” to giving the former PM an advisory role in a Pakatan Harapan (PH) cabinet, Channel News Asia (CNA) reported today.

“They talk about a senior minister (or a) minister-mentor a la Lee Kuan Yew. I’m open to a discussion,” Anwar told the Singapore based broadcaster.

Anwar also added that he would not accept PH’s proposal for him to succeed Dr Mahathir as prime minister after six months if the coalition takes over Putrajaya again.

He explained that “the short transition” would mean at least “half a year of uncertainty”.

“You have six months when you are not able to focus on reforms and the economy,” he said.

Anwar was also asked by CNA about appointing Dr Mahathir as deputy PM, to which he answered: “To my mind, he has served twice as prime minister. It’s time that we move on.”

“I emphasise that it is not a question of personality. It is a question of an opportunity to begin anew – a fresh start for this country.

“Malaysians deserve something better. (There is) so much disillusionment about politics now.

“It is not a question of personalities, but a question of an opportunity to begin anew – a fresh start,” he added.
