KUALA LUMPUR (June 22): A shipment of Thai durians have caused the evacuation of a building in the German town of Schweinfurt while 12 postal workers had to be given medical treatment for nausea, CNN reported yesterday.

The report stated that police, firefighters and emergency services were called to the Bavarian post office on Saturday after staff detected strong smell coming from a package.

"Due to the unknown content, it was initially unclear whether the suspect package posed a greater risk," the Schweinfurt police department told the media.

As a result, all staff in the building had to be evacuated to allow the authorities to “carefully examine” the package.

And the culprits were four Thai durian fruits “which a 50-year-old resident of the town had sent home from a friend in Nuremberg”, reported CNN.

The report also stated that six ambulances, five first-responder cars, two emergency vehicles and three fire departments were involved in the operation to investigate the durians.

As for the 12 staff who needed medical attention, six were taken to the hospital “as a precaution”.

The durians were “eventually delivered” to their “intended recipient”, stated the broadcaster.
