KUALA LUMPUR (July 7): Human Resources Minister M Saravanan (pictured) today reminded employers that they have comply with amendments to the Workers’ Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446), FMT reported today.

Saravanan warned that the authorities “will not hesitate to take action” if companies flout the rules.

The amendments came into force on June 1, which require a minimum space for workers’ accommodation, basic facilities, and safety and hygiene bench marks.

Saravanan said a grace period for employers of up to Aug 31 has already been given to allow them to make the necessary changes.

As for some companies saying that they are finding it difficult to adhere to the new requirements owing to the myriad disruptions caused by the Covid-19 outbreak, Saravanan said: “That is not a valid excuse.”

“The amendments were passed in Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara last July, and that was before Covid-19. The rules are strong enough, and the fines can reach up to RM50,000.

“We’re not cruel. We can give them some leeway, but these companies have to follow the rules. We will start enforcement on Sept 1,” the news portal reported him saying during a visit to a workers’ hostel in Bangsar South.
