Court grants injunction against shooting of stray dogs in Manjung, Perak

PETALING JAYA (July 7): The Ipoh High Court granted a temporary injunction to stop the Manjung municipal council from shooting stray dogs, FMT reported today.

Rajesh Nagarajan of Lawyers for Animal Rights, told the news portal that High Court judge Mohd Radzi Harun granted the injunction based on the group’s application “arguing that the council had committed an illegal act in violation of the Animal Welfare Act 2015”.

According to Section 30 (1) of the act, an animal may not be culled by any firearm unless “authorised by the veterinary authority in an emergency, or for disease control”.

“This is a momentous day for animal rights in Malaysia. For the first time, an injunction has been granted against the shooting of dogs,” he told FMT.

According to the same report, the injunction was filed on Friday after the Manjung municipal council issued a circular late last month stating it would “eradicate stray dogs by shooting them”.

The court has fixed July 28 for case management.
