PETALING JAYA (July 9): Five men were charged today at the Magistrate’s Court here today with the kidnap of a businessman/property developer who was later murdered, FMT reported today. One of the men is a Bangladeshi national

Azahari Shahrom Shaihmi, 56; Kasi Nasrul from Bangladesh, 42; Mohd Durai Abdullah, 52; Sheikh Ismail Sheikh Hassan, 26; and N Vikneswarar, 28, were charged under the Kidnapping Act 1961 which carries the death sentence or life imprisonment upon conviction.

They were accused with committing the offence at Tamam Kejiranan Central Spine, Jalan Margosa, Bandar Sri Damansara here at 10.30am on June 10.

The Star reported that a sixth man, Datuk K. Ramachandran, is accused of abetting the five in the crime at the same time and place.

According the the report by the daily, Ramachandran is a former PKR candidate for the Batang Kali state seat during the 13th General Election.

He was charged under Section 109 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 3 of the Kidnapping Act 1961.

Ramachandran faces the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment, and can also be whipped if sentenced to jail.

No plea was recorded from all six men.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Hakim Amir Abdul Hamid did not offer bail, while the court did not set bail and fixed Aug 27 for mention.

The victim Datuk Seri R Arumugam, 55, was reported to have been abducted while jogging at a playground in Bandar Sri Damansara on June 10. His body was found on June 27.

A ransom of S$50 million (RM154 million) was demanded from the family but no payment was made.
