KUALA LUMPUR (July 11): The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) has allocated a total of RM70 million to implement several strategic programmes aimed at boosting the capacity and capability of construction industry players who were affected by the movement control order (MCO).

In a statement today, the CIDB said the efforts are aligned with Malaysia’s policy to increase the use of technology, reduce reliability on foreign workers and create local jobs.

“The programmes are scheduled to be implemented this year, and are aimed at training a total of 30,000 industry players consisting of contractors, construction workers and youths in the areas of building skills, supervision and management as well as the adoption of technology in construction,” the board said.

It is estimated that a total of 17,700 local workers and youths will be able to benefit from training programmes in the form of "Skilling, Reskilling, Upskilling", where accreditation will be provided.

The CIDB said it will also provide apprenticeship programmes, offering placement opportunities for 7,800 local youths at construction companies to obtain training and working experience.

It also estimated that a total of 3,700 local workers and youths will be trained in project supervision and management, while another 400 will be trained in the field of construction site safety.

Other than the aforementioned efforts, the CIDB will also launch several initiatives to enhance the use of technology in construction.

Specifically, it aims to develop local manufacturers with industrialised building system (IBS) capabilities and facilitate local contractors in switching from conventional systems to the IBS.

In addition, the CIDB said it will also provide subsidies to industry players to purchase building information modelling (BIM) software.

Furthermore, the CIDB has also developed mobile applications named "Contractor4U" to facilitate homeowners to search and obtain services from local small contractors.

“Registration for the application is open to all contractors, mainly G1 and G3 contractors. So far, there are 4,500 contractors already registered with the application,” it said.
