KUALA LUMPUR (July 20): A new Covid-19 cluster has been detected in an old folk’s home in Kluang, Johor, with 14 confirmed positive cases, the Ministry of Health (MoH) said today.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the cases comprised 13 Malaysians and an Indonesian.

“The positive cases in this cluster [include] 11 senior citizens [residents of the old folk’s home], one worker and the other was a family member,” said Noor Hisham in his statement.

He said the first case of this cluster (index case) was the latest Covid-19 fatality (patient no. 8770) reported by the ministry yesterday.

He said Covid-19 screening on the latest casualty showed positive results.

The deceased was a Malaysian male, aged 72, who was diagnosed with chronic high blood pressure and had suffered a stroke. He was pronounced dead at 12.51am on July 17 upon arriving at the emergency ward of the Enche Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital in Johor, according to MoH statement’s yesterday.

Prior to this, the ministry had conducted investigations and active case detection.

Up until noon today, 39 people have been screened, where 18 were negative and seven are waiting for results.

Noor Hisham noted that the source of infections is still under investigation; however, preventive measures have been taken by the ministry such as disinfection and decontamination processes in the old folk’s home.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin expressed concern over 13 new clusters that have been detected throughout the current Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO), which began on June 10.

Muhyiddin said in a live televised speech today that the government will implement the MCO again if there is a spike in new Covid-19 cases and urged the public to continue wearing face masks, maintaining a distance of one metre from each other and avoiding physical contact.

Malaysia has reported 21 new cases today — the highest since July 17, when 18 new cases were reported.

This brought the tally of infections in the country to 8,800.
