KUALA LUMPUR (July 22): The government will carry out local lockdowns if there are rise in cases in a particular area and will not implement a national lockdown such as the movement control order (MCO), the Health Ministry explained today.
“We will go back to our standard operating procedures just like we have been doing. If an area has a high number [of Covid-19] cases, then we will initiate a lockdown at that area, not the whole country,” The Star reported Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali saying at Parliament today.
He also clarified that the government will only enforce a local lockdown if there is a “drastic surge in cases”.
Dr Noor Azmi also told the media present in Parliament that even though there are fears over a Covid-19 “third wave”, the authorities “do not have the numbers to define a third wave of the pandemic at a national level”.
