KUALA LUMPUR (July 22): Malaysia logged 16 new Covid-19 cases as of noon today, pushing the number of active cases in the country to 142.

This is the fourth straight day since July 19 that the country recorded a double-digit number of new infections and rising active cases that have stayed above the 100-mark.

On July 19, Malaysia had 15 new infections versus 103 active cases. The next day, new infections rose to 21, pushing active cases to 122. Yesterday, new cases dropped to 15, but the number of active cases continued to grow to 130.

This brought the total infections in the country to 8,831.

Of the 16 new cases, eight were local transmissions involving seven Malaysians. The seven cases were found in Sarawak.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said five cases were detected from three clusters — Stutong (three), Sentosa (one) and PUI Melbourne (one).

The new Melbourne PUI cluster originated from a Malaysian student who returned from Australia on July 15. So far, three cases have been linked to this cluster.

Meanwhile, the remaining two cases involved a family member of patient no. 8,695, and someone who took a Covid-19 test prior to returning to work at a school. The latter was asymptomatic and has been admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital.

According to his statement, the other locally transmitted case involved a foreigner who was screened prior to their departure overseas. The patient, who also did not have symptoms, was sent to the Sungai Buloh Hospital in Selangor.

Meanwhile, the eight imported cases comprise four Malaysians and four non-Malaysians who were permanent residents or allowed to enter the country for work.

“The eight imported cases were from India (two cases), Russia (two cases), Saudi Arabia (one), China (one), Indonesia (one), and Korea (one),” noted Noor Hisham.

So far, five Covid-19 patients are being treated in intensive care, with one of them on a ventilator.

Four patients have recovered and were discharged, bringing the total recovered patients from Covid-19 to 8,566, which represents 96.9% of total cases.

The ministry said no new deaths from Covid-19 were reported today. Thus, the total cumulative deaths in Malaysia remained at 123 (1.39% of overall cases).
