Carrie Lam: Hong Kong 'on brink' of large-scale Covid-19 outbreak

KUALA LUMPUR (July 29): Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam yesterday announced that the city “on the brink of a large-scale outbreak” of Covid-19 and called on resident to stay at home as much as possible, reported Reuters.

The territory will also see fresh regulations to stem the virus kick in today -- such as a ban on gatherings of more than two people, “close dining” in restaurants and the compulsory wearing of face masks in public places and outdoors.

The new measures will be in place for at least seven days, reported Reuters.

"We are on the verge of a large-scale community outbreak, which may lead to a collapse of our hospital system and cost lives, especially of the elderly," Lam said in a statement yesterday.

"In order to protect our loved ones, our healthcare staff and Hong Kong, I appeal to you to follow strictly the social distancing measures and stay at home as far as possible."

Hong Kong reported on Tuesday 106 new Covid-19 cases, including 98 that were locally transmitted.

In Malaysia, the authorities have also made mandatory the wearing of face masks in public places from Aug 1.
