KUALA LUMPUR (July 31): Tokyo (pictured) today saw another 463 new cases of Covid-19, marking another “single-day record”, reported Reuters.

The latest situation has prompted top officials to mull another “emergency” declaration.

“If the situation worsens, Tokyo would have to think about issuing its own state of emergency,” the mega city’s governor Yuriko Koike told the media.

“We’re entering the summer vacation period when people normally make plans for travel and events but unfortunately, this summer will be different from a normal year,” Koike added.

The Japanese authorities lifted an emergency in late May after the country “appeared to have contained the outbreak”, reported the news wire.

Experts say that success was due to the “mask-wearing habits” of the Japanese and the country’s “health system”.

However, Covid-19 seems to be making a comeback over the past week and it could not come at a worse time just as the government was kicking off its Go To Travel subsidy campaign set to revive domestic tourism.

Not agreeing with Koike is Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga who “reiterated the government’s stance” that the country did not need to go through another nationwide state of emergency

Reuters reported him explaining that “the current trend in infections was different from that of the first peak in March and April” when there was a higher number of “serious cases and infections among the higher-risk elderly population”.

Meanwhile, opposition politicians “have accused the government of sending mixed messages” while “putting the economy before virus containment with its launch of the Go To Travel campaign”, stated the news wire.
