Sivagangga, Kurau clusters linked to Hari Raya visiting activities — Health D-G

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 11): Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said most of the cases in the Sivagangga and Kurau clusters of Covid-19 infections are linked to visiting activities during the recent Hari Raya Aidiladha festivities.

He said the two clusters saw an uptick in new infections following the festive season.

“Investigations have been conducted through Active Case Detection and screening of close contacts. It was found that the Covid-19 transmissions for these two clusters are largely due to visiting activities during the festive season," said Noor Hisham at a media briefing yesterday.

He said the ages of the patients in these clusters ranged from two to 70 years old.

Elaborating on the Kurau cluster that was detected in Perak, three new positive cases were detected today by the Ministry of Health through Active Case Detection.

Noor Hisham said the three positive cases were family members to the first case in this cluster (case no. 9,050).

The first case of this cluster had close contact with the three patients during Hari Raya Aidiladha visits on July 30.

Meanwhile, 112 were negative and the remaining eight people are awaiting results.

The ministry reported the Kurau cluster yesterday, with the index case reported on Aug 7. Infections from the cluster have spread to Perak and Penang.

As for the Sivagangga cluster, the ministry reported the cluster on July 28, saying it originated from a restaurant owner in Kedah — a permanent resident who had returned from India on July 13 (patient No 8,937).

Even though visiting activities are allowed, the public are reminded to follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs) such as physical distancing at all times, including between family members.

Noor Hisham also advised those who are unwell or symptomatic to not visit or participate in any celebrations or festivals.

“All three new cases have been admitted to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Perak,” he added.

He said 125 people had been screened and out of the total, five have tested positive for the virus.

Malaysia has recorded eleven new cases as of noon today, bringing total cases in the country to 9,094 with 166 active cases. Meanwhile, 19 people have recovered from the disease, bringing total cured cases to 8,803, or 96.8% of all cases.

No new deaths were reported for the 10th straight day, keeping the death toll at 125.
