Malaysia reports seven new Covid-19 infections as active cases fall below 200-mark

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 18): Malaysia saw seven new Covid-19 infections as of noon today after reporting cases in the double-digit in the previous six days.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said total cumulative cases in the country now stand at 9,219.

Meanwhile, active cases fell below the 200-mark to 192, from 211 yesterday. Eight patients are being treated in the intensive care unit, with two of them needing respiratory assistance.

Noor Hisham said the country’s Covid-19 fatalities remained at 125 for the 19th consecutive day. The last death was reported on July 31.

The number of recoveries was 8,902, or 96.6% of the total cases, after 26 more patients were discharged in the 24 hours until noon today, he told a media briefing.

The director-general said that of the seven new cases, four were imported cases involving two Malaysians and two foreigners.

Of the imported cases, three had come from Bangladesh and the other was a returnee from the UK. All of these cases were detected in Kuala Lumpur.

As for the three locally transmitted cases involving Malaysians, Noor Hisham said two cases were found from the Sala cluster and the other from the Tawar cluster. Both clusters are in Kedah.

Total positive cases from the Tawar cluster stand at 47, while Sala has eight positive cases in total.

Noor Hisham said 1,490 individuals from the Tawar cluster have been screened as of noon today, including 1,195 people in Kedah, 286 people in Penang, and nine persons in Perak.

As for the Sala cluster, 635 individuals had been screened, comprising 629 from Kedah and six from Penang.

“Active case detection and screening of close contacts for these two clusters are ongoing,” said Noor Hisham.
