Sunway Group President Datuk Chew Chee Kin made Tan Sri in Agong’s birthday honour

PETALING JAYA (Aug 19): Sunway Group president Dato Chew Chee Kin was made ‘Tan Sri’ by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah in conjunction with His Majesty’s birthday.
 
Chew was conferred the Darjah Kebesaran Panglima Setia Makhota (PSM), carrying the title of “Tan Sri”, in a ceremony held on August 17, 2020 at Istana Negara.
 
Chew graduated with a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) Degree from University of Malaya in 1974. In 1980, he attended the Program in Management Development at Harvard Business School.
 
He joined Sunway Group in 1981, and became the group’s president starting 1999.
 
Alongside Sunway Group Founder and Chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, Chew has driven the growth of Sunway which has now become one of Malaysia’s largest conglomerates. In 2011, he led the merger between Sunway City Berhad and Sunway Holding Berhad.
 
In 2019, Chew was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Laws Honoris Causa of Monash University.
 
Chew currently drives Sunway Group’s digital transformation agenda, as well as stewards Sunway’s mission to transform Sunway Group’s flagship township Sunway City Kuala Lumpur into a model smart and sustainable city of the 21st century.
 
Chew made instrumental contributions in the development of Sunway University and Monash University Malaysia as well as the setup of Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, Malaysia’s biggest education-focused social enterprise.
 
As a board member of Monash University Malaysia, Chew helped to form a strong tie between Sunway Education Group and Monash University. He has also contributed towards convincing Monash to open its first-ever foreign campus in Malaysia.
 
Meanwhile, Chew joined the board of governors of SJK (C) Chee Wen in Subang Jaya in 2010. He is currently the board’s deputy chairman. He has helped to raise several millions of ringgit for the school and several other vernacular schools.
