Covid-19: Malaysia reports 10 new cases, eight imported

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 23): Ten new Covid-19 infections were reported in Malaysia today, eight of which were imported cases, while the remaining two were local transmissions under the Tawar cluster, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

This raised cumulative confirmed coronavirus infections in Malaysia to 9,267. As 10 new recoveries were also recorded (bringing the recovery tally to 8,959 or 96.7% of the total), active cases remained the same at 183.

No new deaths were recorded, so the death toll remained at 125 or 1.35% of the total, health director-general (DG) Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement.

As for the eight imported cases reported today, three were Malaysians and five were foreigners. The patients had returned from Japan (the three infections detected in Sarawak), Indonesia (three cases, of which two were found in Selangor and one in Kuala Lumpur), the Maldives (one in Kuala Lumpur) and Mexico (one in Kuala Lumpur) respectively.

The two new cases under the Tawar cluster — both Malaysians — raised total infections under this cluster to 65. A total of 3,286 people believed to be linked to this cluster had been screened, consisting of 2,758 in Kedah (54 found positive, 2,362 negative and 342 still awaiting results), 517 in Penang (11 found positive and 506 negative), and 11 in Perak (all negative).

Case detection and close contact screening were still ongoing, the DG said.

He also updated that three of the new cases were found under the Alam cluster in Sarawak, where 27 people had been screened and a total of seven were found positive and 18 negative, with two more still awaiting their results.

On Thursday, the ministry announced that this cluster was detected on a ship in the waters off Bintulu, involving four people, after a screening was done on five of the ship's crew who had shown symptoms.
