KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 27): Malaysia has registered five new Covid-19 cases and 16 new recoveries as of noon today.

Ministry of Health (MoH) Director-General (DG) Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the five new infections today bring the total number of cases in the country to 9,296.

Currently, there are 177 active cases that have been isolated and are being treated, down from the 188 cases registered yesterday.

It has been 10 straight days that active cases stayed below the 200-mark.

“With the 16 recoveries today, this means 8,994 or 96.8% of Covid-19 patients have recovered so far,” said Noor Hisham at a media briefing today.

The number of patients that are currently being treated in intensive care unit has dropped to eight, with six of them using ventilators.

In addition, deaths from COVID-19 in Malaysia remain at 125, translating into a fatality rate of 1.34%. It has been 27 days since a patient had succumbed to the disease.

Of the five new cases involving Malaysians, three were locally transmitted while the remaining two were imported from abroad.

“The three locally-transmitted cases involving Malaysians were found in Melaka. Two cases were detected through pre-surgery screening and the other was a symptomatic case,” said Noor Hisham. All of these three cases were found at the Terendak camp military hospital.

As for the two imported cases, one patient had returned from the Philippines while the other returned from Egypt.

“Both [of the imported] cases were found in Selangor,” according to Noor Hisham.
