KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 4): Malaysia today reported 11 new COVID-19 cases — of which seven were imported and four were domestic transmissions — bringing the total confirmed infections in the country to 9,385, according to the Ministry of Health.

Active cases stood at 165 versus 163 reported yesterday, with nine more COVID-19 patients discharged. This raised total recoveries to 9,092, representing a recovery rate of 96.9%.

Death toll from the coronavirus in the country, meanwhile, stayed at 128, as no new fatalities were recorded, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in his daily update on the pandemic.

As for the seven imported cases, two of them involved Malaysians while the remaining five were foreigners. “Five cases were from India and one each from Saudi Arabia and the UK. All these cases were detected in Kuala Lumpur,” said Noor Hisham.

As for the four domestic transmissions, he said three of the infected individuals were locals while one was a foreign detainee at the Beranang temporary detention centre in Selangor.

Of the three locals, Noor Hisham said, one had been traced to the Telaga cluster in Kedah, while two — one detected in Selangor and one in Negeri Sembilan — had been linked to a new cluster, the Immigration Detention Depot Semenyih 2 cluster.

Announcing the discovery of this new cluster today, the MoH said its index case was a foreign detainee scheduled for deportation.

“The person was screened for COVID-19 at a health clinic and was tested positive on Aug 27,” said Noor Hisham.

“The second and third cases of the cluster were two of four Immigration officers at the centre who accompanied the index case patient to the health clinic for screening. Active case detection and close contact screening have since been carried out.

“As of today, some 269 individuals [linked to this cluster] have been screened so far, with a majority of them — or 265 — in Selangor and four in Negeri Sembilan. So far, two from Selangor and one from Negeri Sembilan have been confirmed positive. The rest are either negative or still awaiting test results,” he added.
